Preparation for work in archival agencies in the School is embedded in a matrix of general information management and provision courses offered by a faculty of eighteen with a wide variety of backgrounds and interests. Students may choose to specialize in archives resulting in a masters degree with an emphasis in either library studies or information studies. A core of regularly offered courses (Archives Management, Image and Information Management, and Preservation and Conservation) is complemented by other courses in the School such as Web-site design, information needs and preferences, information system usability, interface design, Directed Individual Study, and internships, usually in Tallahassee institutions. The capital city is rich in opportunities in archival work: the Florida State Archives, individual state agencies, the FAMU Black History Archives, the FSU Archives, and such specialized archives as those dealing with Library Architecture, Nobel laureates, congressional and senatorial papers, and World War II participants overseas and on the homefront. Students are also encouraged to take appropriate archives and public history courses in the History Department. We are making progress developing a program which will meet the SAA’s Guidelines for archival preparation.
