UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH OPENS SEARCH FOR DEAN OF SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES

The University of Pittsburgh invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the School of Information Sciences. A member of the Association of American Universities, the University of Pittsburgh currently enrolls 23,000 undergraduate and 9,000 graduate students in sixteen schools on its Pittsburgh and four regional campuses. The School's Fall term 2000 FTE enrollments included 270 students in the BSIS program and 620 in the three graduate specialties. With its impressive array of world-class cultural and educational institutions and variety of social and recreational amenities, the Pittsburgh area is recognized for its excellent quality of life.
Founded in 1962, the School of Information Sciences [www.sis.pitt.edu] is uniquely multidisciplinary in character. Its 32 full-time faculty members work in such areas as adaptive systems, archives and records management, digital libraries, GIS, information ethics, information policy, information retrieval, intelligent systems, network-based services, visualization, and wireless systems. Instructional programs reflect the School's three cooperating areas of specialization: Information Science, Telecommunications, and Library and Information Science. Degree programs include a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Information Science, a Master of Science in Telecommunications, a Master of Library and Information Science (ALA accredited), and programs in each area leading to the Doctor of Philosophy. The School is a partner in joint programs with other University academic units as well as with several other universities outside the U.S.

The Dean is responsible for providing academic and administrative leadership and for articulating a compelling vision of the School's role in information sciences education and research. A competitive candidate should have a record that demonstrates energetic and imaginative leadership and success in a collaborative environment. The new Dean is expected to have a thorough understanding of national trends and issues in information sciences, significant administrative experience, a commitment to fund raising, and experience in developing partnerships both internal and external to the University. As the academic leader and chief administrator of the School, the Dean reports directly to the Provost of the University. The successful candidate will present a record of distinguished achievement that warrants a tenured appointment as professor in the School. The anticipated date of appointment is July 1, 2002.

All applications received by December 15, 2001 will receive full consideration. Nominations, applications, expressions of interest, or requests for information should be submitted in writing to:
