UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH OPENS SEARCH FOR DEAN
OF SCHOOL OF INFORMATION SCIENCES
The University of Pittsburgh invites applications
and nominations for the position of Dean of the School
of Information Sciences. A member of the Association
of American Universities, the University of Pittsburgh
currently enrolls 23,000 undergraduate and 9,000
graduate students in sixteen schools on its Pittsburgh
and four regional campuses. The School's Fall term
2000 FTE enrollments included 270 students in the
BSIS program and 620 in the three graduate specialties.
With its impressive array of world-class cultural
and educational institutions and variety of social
and recreational amenities, the Pittsburgh area is
recognized for its excellent quality of life.
Founded in 1962, the School of Information Sciences
[www.sis.pitt.edu] is uniquely multidisciplinary
in character. Its 32 full-time faculty members work
in such areas as adaptive systems, archives and records
management, digital libraries, GIS, information ethics,
information policy, information retrieval, intelligent
systems, network-based services, visualization, and
wireless systems. Instructional programs reflect
the School's three cooperating areas of specialization:
Information Science, Telecommunications, and Library
and Information Science. Degree programs include
a Bachelor and a Master of Science in Information
Science, a Master of Science in Telecommunications,
a Master of Library and Information Science (ALA
accredited), and programs in each area leading to
the Doctor of Philosophy. The School is a partner
in joint programs with other University academic
units as well as with several other universities
outside the U.S.
The Dean is responsible for providing academic and
administrative leadership and for articulating a
compelling vision of the School's role in information
sciences education and research. A competitive candidate
should have a record that demonstrates energetic
and imaginative leadership and success in a collaborative
environment. The new Dean is expected to have a thorough
understanding of national trends and issues in information
sciences, significant administrative experience,
a commitment to fund raising, and experience in developing
partnerships both internal and external to the University.
As the academic leader and chief administrator of
the School, the Dean reports directly to the Provost
of the University. The successful candidate will
present a record of distinguished achievement that
warrants a tenured appointment as professor in the
School. The anticipated date of appointment is July
1, 2002.
